How LandfillPrices collects and verifies disposal fees

Published facility rates, official sources, transparent attribution, and checked dates.

LandfillPrices is built around published landfill and transfer-station fee schedules. Our methodology explains where information comes from, what qualifies for publication, and how comparisons are calculated.

Our standards

The principles behind every listing

A facility record must be supported by published information. Missing prices and undocumented details are not filled in through assumption.

Official sources

Facility rate sheets and official county, municipal, and state solid-waste publications form the basis of the directory.

Source and date required

Every published facility record must include its source name, source URL, and checked date.

No invented fees

A facility without a published fee schedule is not listed as a verified priced facility. Missing prices remain unpublished.

Step 1 — sourcing

Where our facility information comes from

The directory uses official sources that publish disposal facility information and applicable fee schedules.

Collection focuses on official county and state solid-waste pages, municipal publications, and facility rate sheets.

Aggregator pricing, unsourced estimates, and third-party claims are not substitutes for an official published fee schedule.

Source types

  • County publications Official county solid-waste information and published disposal schedules.
  • State publications Official state solid-waste resources and facility information.
  • Municipal publications Official city or municipal disposal information and rate documents.
  • Facility publications Official facility rate sheets and published fee schedules.

Step 2 — verification

What must be verified before publication

A candidate facility is checked against its official published information. The facility identity, location, fee structure, and source must be sufficiently clear to support a record.

The published schedule must contain actual fee information. A facility that publishes no fee schedule is not included as a priced facility listing.

Where a fee schedule distinguishes between materials, vehicle categories, minimum charges, or resident and non-resident rates, those distinctions are preserved where documented.

Required record information

  • Facility name The published facility identity.
  • Operator and facility type County, city, private operator, landfill, transfer station, or both, as documented.
  • Location City and state associated with the facility.
  • Published fee fields Per-ton charges, minimums, flat fees, and material surcharges where published.
  • Source documentation Source name, direct source URL, and checked date.

Step 3 — attribution

Every published fee carries its source.

Readers should be able to identify where a published amount originated and when the information was checked.

Required price attribution

Every published price or fee is accompanied by the following information:

  • Price as published by [source name]
  • Checked YYYY-MM-DD
  • A direct link to the original source.

The source's published figure is retained without inventing, rounding, or embellishing its value.

Unpublished fees

When a facility does not publish a price, the directory does not display an estimated or substitute amount. A quote-only or unpublished charge is not presented as a published fee.

Step 4 — maintenance

How records are updated

Published facility schedules can change. The checked date identifies when the underlying source information was reviewed.

Updated official schedules and submitted corrections provide opportunities to review existing records.

LandfillPrices does not promise a fixed automatic refresh interval for every facility. The checked date should be used to understand when a source was last reviewed, not as a guarantee that its fee remains current.

How changes enter the review process

  1. 1
    Updated information is identified

A new official schedule or correction is received or located.

  2. 2
    The source is reviewed

The relevant published information is checked against the facility record.

  3. 3
The record is revised if verified

Supported changes are incorporated with updated source and checked-date information.

Step 5 — calculations

How the comparison tool calculates estimates

The calculator performs client-side calculations using the published fee fields in the facility dataset. It does not obtain prices from an external pricing API.

Per-ton rates

When an applicable per-ton rate and a known estimated load weight are available, the weight-based amount is calculated from those published inputs.

Minimum charges

A published minimum is considered where its application is documented in the facility schedule.

Vehicle-flat rates

Published car, pickup, or trailer flat rates are used only for their matching vehicle categories.

Missing information is not estimated

The calculator does not assign assumed weights to cars, pickups, or trailers. It does not invent unpublished material surcharges, taxes, or additional fees.

If a published schedule does not contain enough information to calculate a reliable amount, the result is identified as unavailable rather than filled in with a guess.

When published resident and non-resident rates differ, the calculator does not assume which rate applies to an individual user.

Open Fee Comparison Tool

State median calculations

Homepage state medians are calculated from collected facility records that contain published per-ton tipping fees. Facilities without a published per-ton rate are not included in that calculation.

A state median represents the collected qualifying records, not every disposal facility in that state.

Material-specific records

How material-specific fees are handled

Material pages are derived from facility records that document the corresponding published fee or surcharge.

Material-specific records are published only when the official schedule identifies an applicable charge. General tipping rates are not automatically treated as material-specific fees.

Material categories

Limitations and transparency

What this methodology does not claim

The directory is a collection of verified published information, not a complete census of every disposal facility or every charge.

Not every facility is included

A facility is not presented as a verified priced listing without an identifiable published fee schedule.

Not every charge is published

Quote-only fees, unpublished surcharges, and missing pricing information are not replaced with estimates.

Not a guaranteed current price

Published fees may change after a source is checked. The checked date identifies the review date, not a price guarantee.

Corrections and contributions

How to report an updated fee or source.

Readers can submit updated official schedules, report changed facility fees, or suggest facilities that should be reviewed.

Submissions are reviewed against their supporting sources. They do not automatically change published facility records.

Submit a Fee or Correction

What helps us verify a correction

  • Facility identification The facility name, city, and state.
  • Official source A direct link to the updated county, municipal, or facility publication.
  • Specific change The affected fee, material category, or facility detail.
  • Published effective date The effective date stated in the updated schedule, when available.

Report an error

Report a correction

Use this form when a facility record, published fee, or source shown on this site is wrong or out of date.

Corrections are reviewed against the official source before anything changes. Nothing is published automatically.

Link directly to the official facility, county, or municipal schedule that supports the correction.

Our commitment

Published sources. Honest comparisons.

LandfillPrices aims to make published disposal fees easier to find without disguising missing information or presenting estimates as official facility prices.

Every published fee should be traceable to its source and checked date.
